What is Xdrive Desktop?
Xdrive Desktop is an application that allows you to access your Xdrive directly from Windows Explorer or My Computer, instead of a web browser. When you install Xdrive Desktop, it will map Xdrive to your computer, making it appear like any other disk drive on your PC. When the software is running and you are connected to the Internet, you can easily drag and drop files and folders from your local and network drives to your Xdrive.

Whether you are backing up folders containing critical data, or uploading the photos from your latest party, Xdrive Desktop makes it easy to transfer your data to our remote servers.

Can I edit or update my files directly on my Xdrive when running Xdrive Desktop?
Many files can be edited or updated directly on your Xdrive. However, some applications will require a local copy of your file. In these cases, you will need to download the file to your computer's local disk drive, make your changes and then upload the file back to your Xdrive. As long as the file name remains the same, you can upload the file and it will replace the older version.

For more information, see: Using Applications to Directly Access Files on Your Xdrive.

You can also view the Xdrive Desktop Monitor by clicking the Monitor button on the Xdrive Desktop Console. Use the Monitor to check the status when you are transferring multiple files and to check for system messages or errors.

Is Xdrive Desktop secure?
Xdrive, a Verisign Secure Site, takes security very seriously. We recognize that our customers trust us to store their important and private files.

We have many systems in place to help maintain regular availability of the Xdrive service, including redundant routers, switches, and hardware. To provide scalability and reliability, load balancing is used to transparently distribute incoming requests among Xdrive servers. While state-of-the-art equipment is used and precautions are taken, no system is 100% failsafe and you should consider this as you decide which files to upload and how many copies you maintain on other systems.

Does Xdrive Desktop support file names that use foreign or multi-byte characters?
Xdrive Desktop fully supports different language settings. Multi-byte characters are encoded and decoded based on your computer's default language preference. For example, if you are running the Portuguese version of Windows 2000, Portuguese filenames will be properly encoded and stored on our servers. Problems may be encountered if you need to access files that have been named using characters foreign to your computer's language settings.

Why don't I see my files when I upload them into my account from one computer and attempt to view them from another computer?
The Xdrive Desktop software temporarily caches all files selected for upload to your Xdrive. These files are stored in a cache directory on your PC. Occasionally this file will not clear automatically and will give the impression that files have disappeared.

To correct this, either log off and log back in to Xdrive Desktop, or clear the cache file.

Do I need Network Neighborhood enabled on my system to use Xdrive Desktop?
Yes. All basic Windows networking functions must be enabled to run Xdrive Desktop. These functions enable your Xdrive to appear like any other disk drive on your PC.

Do personal firewalls interfere with Xdrive Desktop?
Possibly. Firewalls can prevent your local computer from accessing your Xdrive.

Click one of the following links for instructions on configuring ZoneAlarm or Symantec's Norton firewall to work with Xdrive Desktop. If you are using McAfee personal firewall, you will need to disable it in order to use the Desktop software.

Why can't I map my Xdrive network drive after connecting?
The installation of other software products may cause the disablement of a Windows service called WebClient. This service is needed for Xdrive to function properly. To enable this service, click on Start --> Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Services. Once the Services panel launches, then look for a service called WebClient. Right click on the service name and select Properties. On the General tab, select Automatic to enable this service automatically upon login or Manual to enable it manually upon need.
